Only Three Weeks Ago...

Can you believe that just three weeks ago we were at Jackson chasing numerous coyote, sharing drinks and tailgate and planning for our Closing Meet.  And then the world turned upside down.  And we cancelled the Thursday hunt and our closing meet; and we all started contemplating and then practicing social distancing.  We started washing our hands (something that fox hunters only do when they clean tack), and wiping down surfaces with alcohol (again, not the same alcohol or our usual practice).  We are communicating differently, living differently and even caring for our horses differently.

On a personal note, I have moved from the wonderful house, The Balcony, to a lovely old home on Colleton.  With just 6 rooms and no barn, I can now find my______(dogs, cellphone, keys, cup of coffee, etc.) easily.  Though the closing on the Balcony was postponed, it looks like it will still go through in mid -May.  Meanwhile, those lovely rooms sit empty (again, just 2 months ago, there were about 150 people at the hunt week party!)

And many things continue:  Joseph takes great care of our fantastic hounds.  It was an abrupt end to a truly wonderful season but fortunately ended with a great hunt.   And though all hound shows were cancelled, Joseph walks out hounds daily and is starting to get the puppies out.  I actually miss the hound walks (aka "drag-a-member") at Odell Weeks.  The hunt committee is meeting tomorrow - but as a Zoom conference!

Betsy has been working hard on the directory, which will actually go to press this week. I'm about to get back to working on the new website.

Let us know your thoughts and needs at this time.  Do you need some light reading with a hunt theme?  Try Somerville and Ross "The Irish RM" or all of those Rita Mae Brown novels.  Or you could brush up on Hunting Etiquette with "Riding to Hounds in America" (the hunt has copies available to borrow).  Send us your favorite reading... Or think about a topic for an article for the magazine - and then write it!

You may already be putting together trail rides - but if you are willing to let others join in, we can send out an email.  Numbers will be limited by current protocol - but the kalmia are about to bloom in the Woods!

Stay safe, wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands!

Freddy
